Clarke College and Mercy Medical Center Announce Nursing Partnership

posted on June 20, 2007

Clarke College and Mercy Medical Center are pleased to announce a partnership that will provide accessible and affordable degree advancement for Mercy nurses.  Through this partnership, Clarke will deliver an accelerated program for registered nurses on-site at Mercy to complete a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree, while placing a unique focus on Mercy’s vision of excellence in nursing.

“Clarke College is a leader in preparing nurses and Mercy Medical Center is a leader in healthcare,” said Clarke President Joanne M. Burrows, SC, Ph.D. “We are confident that Mercy nurses will benefit from the expertise of Clarke’s faculty, while receiving course content geared toward their specific needs.”

“This progressive and innovative offering provides a convenient option for Mercy nurses who wish to complete their bachelor’s degree in nursing,” said Kay Takes, Mercy chief nursing officer and vice president of patient care services.  In 2004, Mercy became the 134th hospital in the nation and the second in Iowa to receive the prestigious Magnet designation for excellence in nursing practice.   According to Takes, to achieve and sustain Magnet designation, hospitals must demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing nursing practice and providing a practice environment which enables nurses and other clinicians to give their best care.  “This partnership with Clarke College will support our commitment.”

RNs will move through an accelerated 18-month program to complete a BSN degree. Some nurses in the first cohort will begin general education courses this summer, with the nursing curriculum beginning in the fall.

The partnership is being implemented through Clarke’s TimeSaver Program, which offers seven majors designed to allow working adults to work toward a degree without compromising work, family, or community commitments.  Other majors include accounting, business administration, communication, computer information systems, psychology and religious studies. Clarke also offers four graduate programs:  master of science in nursing (MSN), master of business administration (MBA), master of arts in education (MAE), and doctor of physical therapy (DPT).
