Clarke to Launch New Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree

posted on February 28, 2011

Clarke University is pleased to announce that it will begin a new doctor of nursing practice degree program this fall. The program has received interim approval by Iowa Board of Nursing and has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the university’s national accrediting body.

The new doctor of nursing practice program will begin in fall 2011 in a transitional format designed for individuals with a master of science in nursing degree in a clinical area. In 2012, the BSN-to-DNP option will also enroll students who have completed a bachelor of science in nursing degree.

This will be the third graduate degree in the health sciences offered by Clarke and the addition brings the total number of graduate degrees offered at the university to five.

Clarke’s current master’s program in family nurse practitioner (FNP) has been highly successful, with graduates having a 100 percent pass rate on board exams. This new doctoral degree builds on this strong foundation and enhances it in a way that aligns with advancements in the nursing profession.

“Moving this program to the doctoral level only continues to enhance the university’s already stellar reputation for excellence in the health sciences,” said Joan Lingen, BVM, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. “It will also allow us to prepare a larger number of advanced nurse practitioners who will play a critical role in addressing the shortage of primary healthcare providers in our state and across the nation.”

The program will consist of advanced coursework, increased clinical hours, and expanded emphasis on leadership and management skills in healthcare systems. These components are all intentionally designed to create a balance and interplay between providing excellent patient care using evidence-based practice and engaging in the scholarly pursuit of knowledge, skills and values.
