On Monday, Oct. 22, Clarke hosted a watch party for the third and final Presidential debate. The watch party, sponsored by the student life office and the history / political science department, was held in Clarke's Student Activity Center. The event began with a short presentation by Clarke faculty member, Dr. Ralph Baker on the history of debates and their impact on elections. The presentation, the debate and a post-debate question and answer session attracted a near capacity room full of students, faculty and neighbors.
On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Clarke University also served as a satellite voting location. Students and residents were able to register and to vote early. The voting station saw a steady flow of students throughout the day, and at one point even ran out of ballots.
On Wednesday, Oct. 24, Food Day came to Clarke. Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. Clarke began by hosting a farmer's market in the student cafeteria. The cafeteria menu also featured dishes made from what the market had available that day.
One objective of the Food Day events was to help students make stronger connections to the importance of supporting local agriculture, and to bring awareness to the many issues Food Day was created to address, from health, nutrition and hunger to agriculture policy and farm worker rights.
The Food Day celebration was just one part of Clarke's Food Week, a collaboration of several campus groups; campus ministry, culinary club, the sustainability committee, and dining services.
