Music composition student Luke Flynn '13 is well-known around Clarke's campus as a man of many artistic talents. Already a highly successful composer of music, his compositions have been performed in multiple states as well as South Korea and Japan.
In the spring of 2012, Luke was named one of three winners among several thousand entries in the San Jose Choral Project. His winning composition, "Beneath the Wave," was a piece written for the victims of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit parts of Japan.
Winning the competition is a feat in and of itself – one made more remarkable given the fact that it was written in his non-native language of Japanese. Having studied abroad in Japan in spring 2011, this was more than just a standard composition for Luke.
"It was not just waters of destruction and sadness that swept the country," he said. "A wave of strength, endurance and love guided the people of Japan to remain focused on what was important: recovering and helping one another."
Luke was Clarke's first student to graduate from Clarke's music composition program.
