Fall Mission Trip takes Clarke students to Chicago

Mission TripBy Tasha Redmond

The Fall Mission Trip to the southside of Chicago was a real eye opener.

We spent the first day at Our Lady of Tepeyac Elementary School sorting donated food items, organizing school supplies and helping convert an old classroom into a library. For that project, we dug books out of storage and arranged them alphabetically on the shelves to make space for the new library. After the school hours, we all went down to the cafeteria where we helped with the afterschool program. We were able to assist students with homework, talk to them and play games with them both inside and out on the playground. At the end of the first day, I was able to see the impact we had on the children at this school. One little girl expressed how excited she was about getting the library because she loved to read.

The second day was a bit more challenging for me. We started our morning at The Women's Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This center gives women the support and information they need during an unexpected pregnancy or a crisis pregnancy. The center organizers try to position the center across the street or near an abortion center because they want to help stop abortion and all of the negative things that come with it. We first helped the center set up for a garage sale. Some members of our group sorted and folded baby clothes, while the rest of us put tags on bottles.

That afternoon, we went to The Garden Center, which is a home for mentally and physically challenged adults. Due to budget cuts, their grounds were severely unkempt so we pulled weeds for them. This simple task was such a huge help to them and I would never have thought that it would make so much of a difference for the residents.

I'm so glad I went on this mission trip. The differences and similarities between the two days still sticks in my mind. The first day we were able to see the impact we had on the kids of Our Lady of Tepeyac Elementary School. I didn’t want to leave those children. But the second day, I could feel the impact it had on me, and for that, I will never forget this mission trip.

Those on the mission trip included Anastasia Nicklaus, Radie Roberts, Anna Barclay, Brittany Gosse, Corey Bormann, Dan Tatara, Jasmine Riesberg, Maggie Dolan, Megan Lehmkuhl, Melanie Schultz, Riley Taubert, Tasha Redmond, Tina Pease.
