2016 Scholarship Recipients

 

 
Atkinson

Krista Atkinson
| Clinton, Iowa

Krista Atkinson, a recent graduate of Prince of Peace High School, began taking courses at Clinton Community College before her high school graduation. She maintains a 4.0/4.0 grade-point average at the college level. In high school, she served as Student Council president and National Honor Society vice president. She served as captain of her basketball team and was 1st Team All-Conference during her senior year. She was also captain of her volleyball team and 2nd Team All-Conference her junior and senior year. On her soccer team, she earned the title of MVP. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and with her church during children’s liturgy in addition to working as a nanny.  

Cahoon

Cassandra Cahoon
| Monona, Iowa
 
Cassandra Cahoon is a graduate of MFL Mar Mac High School where she served as secretary of the National Honor Society and secretary and vice president of her class student council. She also competed on her high school’s volleyball team. Cassandra volunteered with the after-school tutoring program, the MFL Ambulance and the Monona Lions Club. She describes herself as having strong leadership skills and the desire “to grow to be an even more successful leader.” 
 
Gates

Francine Gates 
| Bagley, Wisc.
 
Francine Gates is a graduate of River Ridge High School in Patch Grove, Wis., and also received her CNA certification from Southwest Technical College in Fennimore, Wis. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a class officer as well as being active in many clubs. She served as president of the Science Club and Wellness Club and vice president of the Spanish Club. Francine was also a Choir State Gold Medalist and Dance Captain. Her volunteer work included peer education with Friends Helping Friends and assisting with bow shooting with the Sportsmen Club. Her goals include obtaining a doctorate of physical therapy from Clarke University.
 
Koetz
 
Emily Koetz | Peosta, Iowa
 
Emily Koetz is a an honor roll graduate of Beckman Catholic High School where she played roles in each drama production – fall plays and spring musicals – all four years. She also played percussion for the marching band, concert band, pep band and jazz band. In addition, she served as president of the Art Club and a member of the Spanish Club. She volunteered with Campus Ministry and Students for Life. She also volunteered with the Centralia Peosta Fire Department and the Archdiocese of Dubuque’s Special Needs Retreat Team. She traveled to Kentucky for a service trip and volunteered with the Special Olympics.
 Lyon  
Joseph Lyon | Maquoketa, Iowa
 
Joseph Lyon, a graduate of Maquoketa High School, maintained a consistent cumulative 4.0/4.0 grade-point average and served as secretary of his school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. He played soccer all four years, serving as team captain for two years, and competed on the varsity cross country team for three years. Joseph also helped lead the tenor and baritone sections of the Maquoketa High School Concert Choir. Additionally, he was a dedicated Church Council Youth Representative where he participated in mission work in the community through the First Lutheran Church Youth Group.

 
Ottavi
 
Maria Ottavi | Dubuque, Iowa
 
Maria Ottavi is a graduate of Wahlert High School where she was highly active in the drama department all four years. She was elected as a member of the thespian board of directors by the Troupe #3842 Thespian Board where she organized events within the drama department. In addition, she participated in the ACDA Honor Choir, a six-state honor choir, and the Iowa Opus Honor Choir. She served on the Youth Leadership Team through the Church of the Resurrection and was nominated for the Dubuque Area Youth Leadership Council. Maria was also a varsity cheerleader for the football team and recipient of the Academic Achievement Award for maintaining excellent academic standing. In college, she hopes to meet, learn about and inspire others within their own academic journey.
