Clarke Education Department Presents ‘Teaching in the Wild’

The Clarke University Education Department has invited some of the best local and national educators to share their methods for elementary, middle school and high school teachers at a conference on Saturday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center on the Clarke campus. “Teaching in the Wild” is geared toward professional educators, college students and education-related agencies.Every educator needs opportunities to be encouraged, rejuvenated and inspired. Clarke promises a day filled with helpful tools for implementing new ideas and innovative methods in your classroom.This conference is for you if you care about:•    Educating ALL learners•    Literacy•    Best practices across the curriculum•    New trends in education•    Innovative ways to use technologyThe keynote speaker is Donalyn Miller, who has worked with a variety of upper elementary and middle school students and currently teaches fifth grade at O.A. Peterson Elementary in Fort Worth, Texas. In her popular book, “The Book Whisperer,” Miller reflects on her journey to become a reading teacher and describes how she inspires and motivates her middle school students to read 40 or more books a year. In her latest book, “Reading in the Wild,” Miller collects responses from 900 adult readers and uses this information to teach lifelong reading habits to her students.Miller currently facilitates the community blog, The Nerdy Book Club, and co-writes a monthly column for Scholastic’s Principal-to-Principal Newsletter. Her articles about teaching and reading have appeared in publications such as The Reading Teacher, Educational Leadership and The Washington Post.The cost to attend the conference is $80; full-time students, $30.
