Award-winning Pianist to Perform at Clarke

SakiFebruary 12, 2016: Saki Kodama, an award-winning pianist who is studying at Clarke University, will present a piano recital at Jansen Music Hall on the Clarke campus on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 4:30 p.m. The recital is free and open to the public.  

The program will include Sonata Op. 10, No. 3 by Beethoven, Ballade No. 4 by Chopin, Allegro de Concierto by Granados, and Hanawasaku by Japanese composer Yoko Kanno. Kodama will be joined by violinist Emily Ott for Sonatina by Dvorak.

Kodama was born and raised in Kagoshima, Japan. She studied piano with her mother, Yukiko, for two years and has been a student of Ikuko Katanoda since 2000. Saki is a student at the International University of Kagoshima, where she is a music major, focusing on a degree in piano performance. Currently, she is enrolled at Clarke where she takes a variety of music classes such as music theory, composition, Advanced Chamber Ensemble and Jazz Band. She studies piano with Dr. Sharon Jensen.

Kodama is an award-winning pianist and has performed in a number of recitals and concerts in Japan. She was the winner in the South Japan Newspaper Piano Competition and in the Kagoshima International Piano Competition. She received the Gold Award in the Kagoshima Prefecture High School Piano Competition. She performed as piano soloist with the Krakow National Orchestra of Poland and with the Kagoshima Symphony Orchestra.
