Honor Jazz Band Festival To Be Held At Clarke

March 30, 2016: Clarke University is proud to offer the 23rd annual Honor Jazz Band Festival for area high school students, presented on Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in Jansen Music Hall. Admission is free.

Local music students will work with an incredible jazz saxophonist and jazz teacher/composer – Chris Madsen. A graduate of Julliard, Madsen serves as Jazz Studies coordinator at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and directs the Jazz Program at Midwest Young Artists. Madsen is an in-demand figure in the Chicago jazz world as a composer, performer and pedagogue. A sought-after jazz clinician, Madsen serves on the Education Committee for the Jazz Education Network. He spent three years in New York, performing with and writing for such jazz masters as Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Bobby Short, and many others.

Marsalis has been quoted as saying, “I'd rather listen to (Madsen) than most other players out there right now.”

Students selected for this event include: Dubuque Senior – Melissa Olivares, Eli Gregorich, Justin Nowack, Macy Schmidt, Eric Blum; Dubuque Hempstead – Emma Fassbinder; Cascade – Austin Sanders, Gabrielle Foust-Wollenberg; Western Dubuque – Chris Bramel, Blake Marsh, Colin Schumacher.

Students rehearse all day with Madsen before putting on a performance for the public.
