Clarke Celebrity Classic to Feature UNI's Rick Hartzell

posted on June 7, 2005

The Clarke College Celebrity Classic Committee is pleased to announce that this year’s 17th annual golf outing will feature College of Northern Iowa Athletic Director and NCAA Division I Basketball Referee Rick Hartzell. This year’s Celebrity Classic will be held on Monday, June 13, at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club.

Now entering his sixth year as director of athletics at the College of Northern Iowa, Hartzell has overseen unparalleled success and growth for the Panthers athletics program. In 1999, he was named the College’s fourth full-time director of athletics since joining the Division I ranks. Hartzell is also a NCAA Division I basketball official.

The list of individual and team athletic successes since Hartzell took over at UNI is long and distinguished. In fact, no less than 10 sports have seen teams or individuals in postseason action since Hartzell came back to the Cedar Valley. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education and English from UNI and his master’s degree in educational administration in 1977.

Proceeds from the Celebrity Classic fund seven $2,500 scholarships for outstanding area high school students planning to attend Clarke College. Scholarships are offered to one graduating senior of Hempstead, Senior and Wahlert High Schools in Dubuque, and one each to graduating seniors attending an accredited high school in Dubuque County and Jackson County, both in Iowa, Jo Daviess County in Illinois and Grant County in Wisconsin.

Scholarship recipients are chosen based on demonstrated academic success and evidence of involvement in church, school and community activities. They are also chosen based on a personal interview and submitted essay.

Golfing is available in both the morning and afternoon with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each session is limited to 29 foursomes. The event will conclude with cocktails, an auction and dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Registrations are $700 per foursome or $175 per person and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Dinner-only reservations are available for $60 per person. To make a reservation, please call the Clarke College Development Office at (563)588-6405. More information can also be found at
