Clarke College is pleased to announce that Susan A. Dubuisson, a 1971 Clarke alumna, will present the address to the graduates at this year’s 164th Commencement ceremony. This year’s event will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, in the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center on the Clarke campus. Click here for complete Commencement information.
Dubuisson, who holds a bachelor’s degree in French from Clarke, is currently in her sixth term as a Thurston County (Washington) District Court judge. After graduating from Clarke, she moved to Chicago, where she assisted three other women in breaking the gender barrier for U.S. Customs Service officers assigned to clear foreign vessels at Navy Pier. After several years, she moved to Washington and entered law school at the College of Washington.
Upon graduating with her juris doctorate in 1976, Dubuisson accepted a position as a deputy prosecuting attorney in a rural county bordering on the Pacific coast, where she was the first woman prosecutor. She later moved 50 miles away to the state capitol of Olympia, where she currently resides. After a general private practice of law, she was appointed in 1984 to fill a vacancy as a district court judge, which she continues to hold today.
Dubuisson is also heavily active in professional and community organizations, including the Community Youth Services, the YWCA, the Red Cross, Dispute Resolution Center, the Board for Court Education, District and Municipal Court Judges Association, the state Judicial College, and the Judicial Conduct Commission. She has also taught for the “Judges in the Classroom” program for middle schools and the YMCA high school mock trials.
At this year’s Commencement, degrees will be conferred upon approximately 250 undergraduate and graduate students. To accommodate additional guests, the ceremony will be simulcast on televisions in Clarke’s Student Activity Center, which is connected to the Kehl Center. The Commencement Ceremony will be preceded by a baccalaureate liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Dubuque, where graduates will receive their academic hoods.
