Clarke Provides Holiday Cheer to Hurricane Sandy Victims

Giving Tree will Benefit Children in Rockaway, NY

Clarke University announced today that they have partnered with St. Rose of Lima School, a Catholic elementary school in Rockaway Beach, NY, to be the beneficiaries of Clarke’s Giving Tree.  The Giving Tree is a holiday outreach program sponsored annually by the school’s campus ministry department.

Rockaway Beach is located on the Rockaway Peninsula, on the south shore of Long Island.  Directly facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Queens, NY neighborhood was one of the hardest hit during Hurricane Sandy.  As a result, the students of St. Rose Lima School were greatly affected by the storm’s destruction.  Even so, just three weeks after the hurricane, St. Rose became the first school on the peninsula to reopen.

While the children have already been provided with new book bags full of school supplies, most lost everything in their homes.  Therefore, the school’s principal has asked that donations from Clarke’s Giving Tree include items such as children’s books, word games, coloring books, clothing, hats, gloves, and scarves.

Clarke’s Giving Tree can be found in the Wahlert Atrium, outside the Sacred Heart Chapel. Donations are welcomed from both the Clarke University and local communities. All items should be returned to the Campus Ministry Center, located in the Student Life wing of the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center, by Friday, Dec. 14.
