Clarke University Summer Scholarly Projects

The 2025 Clarke University Summer Scholarly Projects are designed to expose high achieving sophomore, junior and senior high school students to the world of scholarly engagement with faculty in respective areas of expertise.

Students will be able to work one-on-one or in a small group with other high school and Clarke University students with faculty guidance and engagement on a scholarly project. Academic areas of interest is Computer Science, English/Communication and Biology/Anatomy.

Writer’s Workshop

Up to fifteen high school students will be chosen

Cost: FREE

Overview
Students will be led through active sessions where they discuss writing in different genres and use those writings as a springboard for their own writing. Students will also be led in workshops of each other’s writings where they are guided in offering constructive feedback and taking their own writing through a revision process.

Project Details
Students will meet Monday, July 21 – Friday, July 25 2025, from 10 a.m. – Noon on the Clarke University campus. On Saturday, July 26 they are invited to St. Joseph Hall at Mt. Carmel for a public reading and discussion of their work.

All student applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an entering sophomore, junior, or senior in high school.
  • Participants will benefit from having completed or being enrolled in an English, creative writing, or communication courses.

Applicants must submit an application, including a brief statement of interest.

Applications must be received by April 15, 2025 for consideration.

Game Development with Virtual Reality

Overview
Gaming Development with Meta Quest VR introduces students to not only video game development but also user experience in virtual reality. The development team will research and identify virtual reality interactions and develop virtual environments for future student projects. User experience will be tested and adjusted by the development team prior to delivering the final product.

Project Details
Students will meet Monday, July 28 – Friday, August 1, 2025, from noon–4 p.m. They will sample prototyping, game development, and user experience testing.

All student applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an entering sophomore, junior, or senior in high school.
  • Participants will benefit from having completed or being enrolled in a computer science, art design, or music course.
  • Students interested in art design, music and/or computer programming are desirable.

Applicants must submit an application, including a brief statement of interest.

Applications must be received by June 13, 2025 for consideration.
