Remembering Steve Kapelke

By Clarke News  |  September 25, 2024

It is with a heavy heart that the Clarke University community must share the passing of Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, Steve Kapelke. He passed with family by his side after a long illness.

In just 18 months as Vice President, Steve played a pivotal role at the University. He was instrumental in our recent reaccreditation with the Higher Learning Commission. His steady guidance allowed for the development of an Academic Advising unit, First-Year Studies Department, and new first-year writing curriculum, along with other unique student learning opportunities. Perhaps most critically, he was a champion for change that was willing to struggle and celebrate each milestone with the faculty he served.

It is incredible to see the impact that Steve made on our institution in such a short time. More than a colleague, I was honored and humbled to call him my friend. He was someone of deep integrity, intellect, and kindness, and he will be greatly missed.

Prior to serving as the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Steve also served as the Interim Dean of Adult and Graduate Studies at Clarke from 2012-2014. Prior to this, he was Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at Columbia College in Chicago and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design.

Following Steve’s passing, Yvonne Zimmerman, Ph.D. will transition into the Vice President for Academic Affairs role. She had served alongside Steve as the Dean of Academic Affairs for the past year.

“During Steve’s tenure as VPAA, he led with such care and clarity. He had so much respect and appreciation for our faculty and staff and all that they do,” Yvonne said. “I hope to honor his legacy through my own leadership.”

At this time, service arrangements are still pending. Information will be shared with the Clarke community once they are finalized.
