Clarke Cupboard + Closet Garners Support Near and Far
Building on the success of a mini food pantry system that was implemented on campus in 2022, Clarke is proud to announce the introduction of the Cupboard + Closet. Located in Mary Josita Hall, the space offers free food, clothing, and other goods to students and other members of the Clarke community. During the first week of operation, the site served nearly 100 students.
“With so many of our students living away from home for the first time, the Cupboard + Closet helps ensure they have the resources to be successful,” said Tara Velez, Instructor of Social Work and coordinator for the Cupboard + Closet program. “Additionally, this reduces the waste going into landfills, making it a win-win for our college and community.”
The Cupboard + Closet is run by the Social Work department, with the support of graduate assistants and staff volunteers from across campus. Many of the goods are purchased from St. Stephens River Bend Food Bank in Dubuque, however the group has also received support from local individuals and organizations like the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Among the supporters is Jennifer Moser ’96, a member of the Alumni Association Board. Living in Austin, Texas, she saw donating to students as a great way to keep her connections to Clarke alive from afar.
When I was a student, I know I had times where I faced food insecurity. I was lucky I had people looking out for me, and I’m fortunate to be in a position now where I can help others who are going through that. It takes five minutes to select a few things on a list and have them sent, and it can make such a difference to a student.
Cupboard + Closet have created a public Amazon Wishlist to allow the Clarke community near and far to support the project. Additionally, supporters can make monetary donations to the project at clarke.edu/give.
