A Celebration of Faith and Friendship with Sister Catherine and Sister Jean
In celebration of our shared values and Catholic heritage with Loyola University Chicago, Clarke University is proud to share a special video event, A Celebration of Faith & Friendship. The conversation is moderated by Mary Ann Zollmann, BVM, a Mundelein College graduate who has served on the Board of Trustees of both universities. Together, their conversation delves into how Jean and Catherine used the BVM Core Values of charity, education, justice, and freedom to enrich higher education. In turn, they shared these values with the community through volunteerism, service, and the good works of their thousands of alumni.

Mackin-Mailander lecture: Clarke Lives! Lives That Make a Difference Joan Lingen, BVM ’61
Joan Lingen, BVM ’61, is an alumna, faculty emerita, and beloved member of the Clarke community. Over 47 years of service to the institution, she has collected the stories of the inspired leaders who have called Clarke home – from five Catholic sisters who founded the school, to those who led Clarke’s resurgence after the fire in 1984 and beyond.

Off the Court with Coaches Courtney Boyd and Adam Hocking
The 2021/2022 season for Clarke Women’s Basketball was one for the history books. Most wins in program history, regular season conference champs, back -to-back conference tournament champs, six All-Conference players, Heart Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year, most wins by a head coach in program history, longest winning streak in program history…the list goes on and on! Join President Thom Chesney as he sits down with Coach Courtney Boyd and Assistant Coach Adam Hocking to look back at a historic and monumental season for Women’s Basketball. Nicole McDermott ’24, a guard for the Pride, will join the discussion to share her perspective as a player for the most successful team that Clarke University has ever seen.
Building the Field of Dreams
Spend an evening with President Thom D. Chesney and Clarke University alumna, Sue Riedel ’68 as she reflects on her role in helping to bring the Field of Dreams movie to Dyersville, IA. Sue will share the story of how she came to find the farm that would eventually become the iconic set where Kevin Costner played a final game of catch with his dad and captured the hearts and minds of baseball lovers across the nation. Current student, Tucker La Belle, joins the conversation to share how Sue’s grassroot efforts provided him with a once in a lifetime internship experience when the MLB brought the Yankee’s and White Sox to the Dyersville field in August 2021.

Reflections: A Look at the History and Influence of Mary Frances Clarke Hall with Norm Freund
Reconnect with Clarke University alongside Professor Emeritus Norm Freund. This virtual event will celebrate the history of Clarke University through one of the cornerstones of campus, Mary Frances Clarke Hall. Following a virtual tour and presentation, Norm will lead a Q&A session that invites participants to share their questions and memories of our beautiful campus and Mary Frances Clarke Hall.

Climate Change & Catholicism: Climate Justice as Essential to Catholic Mission
Daniel R. DiLeo, Ph.D., is an assistant professor and director of the Justice and Peace Studies Program at Creighton University. His research and scholarship focus on Catholic social teaching and climate change with particular focus on Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’. Since 2009, he has been a consult with Catholic Climate Covenant of which the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is a founding member. Dr. DiLeo earned his Ph.D. in theological ethics from Boston College.
Following Dr. DiLeo’s lecture, Michael Jackels, Archbishop of Dubuque, offers a reflection.

You will learn about the importance of having an estate plan, how to make your plan your own, and gain a clear understanding of what you can do today to ensure no business is left unfished. Get all of your questions answered and walk away feeling prepared to make the best decisions for you and your family.

Andrea Simmons, DNP
Chronic disease among Americans is on the rise. The increasing rate of illness among us results in trillions of dollars spent every year trying to diagnose and manage these diseases. Health care providers are vital in helping to educate patients on methods for preventing, managing, and reversing these ailments. Gaps in our system exist that prevent providers from implementing interventions necessary to halt the rising rates of disease. This interactive presentation will explore the current state of health in America and compare Western Medicine approaches to the Functional approach. Participants will learn key indicators in the breakdown of health and tips to ensure optimal wellness. Together we will go back to the basics of preventative medicine and learn how a functional lens can help restore health and vitality for all.
Dr. Andrea Simmons ’01, ’08M, 16D is a board-certified family nurse practitioner with a background in pediatric and adolescent medicine, women’s health, and family health care. Early in her practice, she developed an interest in Functional Medicine and has spent the last two years incorporating a more holistic approach to patient care. She is currently seeking certification through the Institute of Functional Medicine and Functional Medicine University. Dr. Simmons is also an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Clarke University. She teaches in the Doctor of Nursing Program. Andrea lives in Southwest Wisconsin with her husband and three busy children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dog, gardening, and spending time outside.

President Thom Chesney will emcee the event and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Bill Biebuyck serves as our mixologist. Bill will demonstrate how to make the perfect Old Fashioned and Manhattan followed by a live Q&A with Sr. Catherine and Thom.
