Frequently Asked Questions: Prospective Students and Families

Q: How does this affect prospective students?

A: Students interested in programs being phased out will work with admissions counselors to explore closely related programs, such as Exercise Science, Business, or other areas aligned with their goals. This realignment allows Clarke to offer a more focused, dynamic range of programs designed to prepare students for their future careers.

Q: Is the quality of education affected?

A: No. Clarke remains committed to academic excellence and maintaining a supportive learning environment grounded in BVM Core Values of freedom, education, charity, and justice. Several programs will still be represented in general education, such as philosophy, religious studies, and first-year writing. We are also committed to creating and supporting new co-curricular offerings in music and the arts and are exploring opportunities for achieving this commitment.

Q: How will this impact athletics?
A: There will be no change to Clarke’s athletic programs or conference participation.

Q: Will Clarke remain a strong choice for students?

A: Yes. Clarke has been a cornerstone of the Dubuque community for more than 180 years and will continue to focus on:

  • Programs serving the majority of students
  • A close-knit campus community
  • Small class sizes and personal faculty attention
  • Strong academics through a values-based education and opportunities for meaningful careers

Q: How does the recent change in presidential leadership impact these decisions?

A: During his tenure as Clarke University’s President, Dr. Fletcher Lamkin laid a strong foundation for implementing strategic initiatives aimed at securing a sustainable future for the institution and its students. Every action taken thus far has been guided by a shared commitment to advancing student success. Acting President Dr. Yvonne Zimmerman, together with the entire leadership team, remains dedicated to building on this momentum and ensuring Clarke is well-positioned for long-term success.

Q: Who can I contact for more information?

A: Prospective students should reach out to admissions counselors to discuss program options, academic planning, and guidance for programs being phased out.
